b          Alexander

14 Mar 1848. Ellen Thom to Governor

James Thom at present serving as Lieutenant in the (Burger?) levies on the frontier is my husband. Since his absence on duty I have been quite destitute of any means of support fro myself and family. As he is drawing a good pay and not having the means of communicating with me...might supply the temporary wants of myself and family by deducting something from his salary..... you will thus perform an act of great charity to a poor helpless woman.

The letter was sent to Col. Cloete - no means of helping without husbands consent.  Will write..and request him to .......  Still no resolution by 25 June 1851
