Dear [fname],

Eish, with the harbour strikes we are sitting with stock out a sea, and new goods aren't being loaded on the other side because the ships are all hanging around here. Air shipments are also delayed because of ash problems and made worse because of the ship problems. All this ranting only means one thing, our books aren't here yet. But not to be daunted, I have listed what should be in soon. One of these is 'The Reelsmith's Primer' a book I am longing to see.
At least with the cooler weather the fishing is improving!

Best regards, Craig Thom

Solunar Tables
Paperback: 32 pages
R65.00
Forecast of the daily feeding times of fish and game for each day of the year A forecast of the daily feeding times of fish & game for the year. There are times when the fish seem more ravenous or the game more plentiful. Solunar tables tell you when.
For over 70 years the sportsmen in the United States &, increasingly, around the world have carried in their fishing vest or game pocket the handy annual edition of the SOLUNAR TABLES®, the booklet that tells them the four times in 24 hours that fish & game will be most active.
Years ago, while there was still such as thing as legal market hunting, the men who made their living by shooting game & catching fish found that these odd-hour activity periods seemed to be in rhythm with the moon's daily southings. They planned their work in accord with this schedule, calculated rather loosely, going afield when the moon was directly overhead or directly underfoot. "Moon Up - Moon Down" was the rule.
By taking this old schedule of "Moon Up - Moon Down" & applying modern science to it, we learned much of wildlife behavior. & in so doing we have learned to forecast, a year or more in advance, these odd-hour activity & feeding schedule, we have coined the word "Solunar", a combination of "sol" & "lunar". Thus, the odd-hour periods are called Solunar Periods.  Buy Online

Upriver and Downstream  New York Times
Paperback: 304 pages 8 x 5.2 x 1 inches
R150.00
The Best Fly-Fishing and Angling Adventures from the New York Times < gathers seventy columns about fishing from freshwater to saltwater, from small ponds to the Great Lakes, from the Pacific Northwest to post-Soviet Russia written for the Outdoors column of the New York Times.
Contributors include such celebrated names as Nick Lyons, Thomas McGuane, Nelson Bryant, Peter Kaminsky, Ernest Schweibert, and Robert H. Boyle. Short, evocative, informative, and entertaining, here are pieces about fly-fishing for wild brook trout, bait-fishing for striped bass, casting into tailwaters, or angling in midwinter. The settings range from Hudson River piers to the Florida Everglades, from Iceland to the Amazon, and the fish include everything from the common sunfish to the esoteric paddlefish. These engaging essays remind us of what fishing is all about: companionship and solitude, challenge and relaxation, nature and technology, from coast-to-coast to around the globe.
Rich with the particulars of water, light, and air, as well as a keen awareness of, as Verlyn Klinkenborg puts it in his introduction, what is happening out there in the deep, in the shallows, at the end of the line, these reflections and recollections beautifully capture the natural world and one of life's most challenging, perennial pursuits.  Buy Online

A View of the River  Luna B. Leopold
Paperback: 312 pages
R249.00
The laws of physics that govern rivers allow for variations, many of them dictated by random chance. Thus, a river's adaptation, as Leopold describes it, tends toward the most probable form, the one with the least variance among hydraulic parameters. We see how this probabilistic tendency plays out as Leopold views the river as a whole from headwater to mouth, in the drainage net, in the behavior of meanders, and in aspects of sediment transport.
Grounded in hydraulics, geomorphology, and surveying, as well as in extensive fieldwork on rivers in the eastern and Rocky Mountain states, Leopold's view of a river is at once technical and personal, providing both a firm foundation for understanding the behavior of rivers--including instructions for getting started in backyard hydrology--and a wealth of firsthand observations by a thoughtful and experienced scientist. It will be of immediate interest and great use as we seek to develop, preserve, and appreciate our most fluid natural resource.
With the Midwest under water, America had a chance to see how effectively it had "improved" its rivers. We've straightened and dredged them, revetted and rerouted them, made massive efforts to control them, yet our actions have been less than successful. Too often, physical changes made to a river conflict with natural processes, resulting in--rather than alleviating--damage. Applying available knowledge on how rivers form and act could prevent such problems. In this book, Luna Leopold seeks to organize such knowledge. Widely regarded as the most creative scholar in the field of river morphology, Leopold presents a coherent description of the river, its shape, size, organization, and action, along with a consistent theory that explains much of the observed character of channels.  Buy Online

Gulf Stream  Stan Ulanski
Hardcover: 232 pages 2008
R280.00
Tiny Plankton, Giant Bluefin, and the Amazing Story of the Powerful River in the Atlantic Ulanski takes readers on a dizzying trip within, afloat and around the Gulf Stream, the mighty oceanic river, powerful enough to be readily seen from space, containing mysterious, scary and tasty creatures: the reclusive, 2,000-pound giant squid; swarms of tentacled, stinging Portuguese man-of-wars and a complex food chain, with tiny drifting phytoplankton (the grasses of the sea) at the bottom and the almost mythic bluefin tuna at the top. The book also depicts human life along the Gulf Stream: Columbus following the trade winds and the North Atlantic gyre to reach the New World; buccaneers and pirates of the Caribbean; Benjamin Franklin, intrigued by the idea of a 'stream' flowing through... the Atlantic Ocean and hoping to speed up mail delivery, measuring and meticulously recording water temperatures on trips back and forth to Europe.
Although the potentially urgent issue of the Gulf Stream in relation to climate change is given short shrift, this multifaceted treatment of the blue god offers something for almost every kind of ocean lover. Publishers Weekly  Buy Online

Tying Flies with CDC (has now been reprinted after being unavailable for some time) Leon Links
Paperback: 160 pages Jun 2010
R249.00
CDC (cul-de-canard) feathers have extraordinary water-resistant properties. They grow near the preen glands of ducks and their lightness and buoyancy makes them invaluable feathers for tying dry flies, emergers and nymphs. The world s most innovative flytyers have discovered new ways of using these versatile CDC feathers. This book demonstrates their very latest CDC tying techniques and fly patterns. The patterns they have invented are often ingeniously simple, requiring easy tying steps and very few additional materials. Today many anglers choose to fish exclusively with CDC flies. Tying Flies with CDC is the definitive guide to this unique feather. It draws on the international ideas of celebrated flytyers: Dutch experts Piet Weeda, Hans van Klinken and Theo Bakelaar; Marc Petitjean of Switzerland and Marjan Fratnik of Slovenia; Elie Beerten of Belgium, Nicolas Ragonneau of France, Paolo Jaia of Italy, René Harrop of America, Tetsumi Himeno of Japan, and many others. This is an inspirational guidebook for the modern flytyer.
This is what Barend Esterhuizen from Sasolburg has to say... Good book This book covers 100s of CDC flies. The book will be well received by people who enjoy reading about the origins and history of things, in this case CDC. The book started of very well, but during chapter 8 [CDC patterns from flytyers around the world, p.65-136] I felt the book was rushed; some contributors' fly details are listed with no photographs and there are instances where there are great Step-by-Step photographs but the flies' name is not mentioned. A good book to own.  Buy Online
