DVD, Against the Flow
R199.00
"Against The Flow" is in essence a road trip. Four friends set out to
follow the course of South Africa's longest river; a river known
variously as the Orange, Groot, Gariep, Senqu or simply Great River.
The odyssey begins in the stark coastal desert of the Northern Cape.
Sixty seven days later it ends in the verdant highlands of Lesotho.
As they travel the river's 2,300 km course they document a collage of
towns, people, histories, landscapes and experiences. They bring to life
a linear oasis that is also a rugged and intriguing frontier.
Along the way they learn about the river, the environment and the
country. They learn about each other, and about themselves. Buy

Gentlement preferred dry flies
William C. Black
6x9 inches, 256 pages, 2011
R199.00
Read as Black gathers the stories of numerous historical characters,
many of them English aristocrats, who have adhered to the traditional
requirement that flies should be modeled on the flying insects that
land on the water's surface, rather than nymphs, the immature form of
the floating insect.
The author has fished with flies all over the world. His knowledge of
the art and sport of catching trout with feathered imitations of native
insects has been imparted to countless students in his annual
Fly-Fishing Basics classes since 1978. But this book far surpasses
Black's experience on the rivers and streams he has fished. There is
evidence that men have been fooling fish with fake flies for over 700
years, possibly much longer, going back to China and Macedonia and Rome.
The first fly-fishing book, written in the early years of the fifteenth
century but not published until 1496, was for many years attributed to
Dame Juliana Berners, an English nun born some years before that.
Subsequent evidence shows that she may not have been the author of the
"Treatise of Fishing with an Angle". The true author is unknown, but
the dictates of the book have lived on ever since in the ever-present
activity of fly-fishing's devotees. Black gathers the stories of
numerous historical characters, many of them English aristocrats, who
have adhered to the traditional requirement that flies should be
modeled on the flying insects that land on the water's surface, rather
than nymphs, the immature form of the floating insect. Gentlemen only
fished for rising fish lured by a fleeting food source. While both
techniques are now equally fascinating to gentlemen (and ladies), the
debate between those who prefer dry flies to wet continues to this
day. Buy

Brook Trout Forest
Kathy Scott
Hardcover, illustrated, 224 pages
R235.00
Of course, you are never far from nature when you read Kathy Scott, but
more than her earlier works this book allows us to see a side of her
that has not been seen. For example, it is as much a story of her
teaching career and how it intersects her fly fishing (in more ways
than you may think) as it is about the fly angling world in which she
and her husband David van Burgel, a rodmaker of genuine talent, are
well known and in demand.
Perhaps because it was written in an older literary form, the book
takes the form of a journal, a favorite literary style of the author's
- it also comes off as a mature work. I don't mean this in an adult
have-no-fun way, as there are still the delightful excursions of
exuberance, such as when Scott describes a play her students wrote
based on one of her books, or when she takes flight for the first time
in a de Haviland Otter float plane. But there is a graceful maturity to
the prose that is refreshing to see in an author of significant talent.
Scott is clearly working hard to become a better writer, and it
shows. Buy

DVD, Underwater World of Trout Volume 3: Vision and Refraction
Wendell Ozzie Ozenfovich
75 minutes
R225.00 Every angler knows the frustration of lining a fish. After finding that
big fish actively feeding, we make a cast where we think it should be,
and quick as a flash it's gone. What you forgot about was the law of
refraction. That fish wasn't quite where you thought it would be. You
thought it was six inches below the surface. But how deep was it, one
foot, two feet, or was it deeper? How large was it's circle of vision,
and does it matter? Sound confusing, well it's surprisingly easy once
you understand what is happening. Refraction has an impact on how we
view a trout and its world, and conversely how a trout views us and our
world. Do trout really have blind spots? How low must you be before
they are aware of your presence? Does it matter what you wear and how
you move? You'd be surprised at the little things that will put a trout
down. We'll watch through a trout's eyes how mayflies and tricos float
into the trout's window and see what the trout sees first. We'll see
that imprint, and the sparkle that you only read about. Most important
of all, we will also see that magnification of the fly that takes place
as the fly enters the trout's window something you may have never read
about. Why are comparaduns and parachute flies so effective, does the
reflected double image of a streamer, a wet fly, or an emerger cause a
trout to miss? How well can trout see both above and beneath the
surface? Buy

A Sand County Almanac with essays on conservation
Aldo Leopold
Hardcover, 190 pages
R395.00
The world does not need another book review of Aldo Leopold's classic
ecological love song, A Sand County Almanac. Its author has already
taken his place in the Parthenon, a select evolving lineage of
naturalist writers: Thoreau begat Muir, Muir begat Leopold, Leopold
begat Carson. The small, insightful observations of a year in a shack
in the rolling mixed Wisconsin woodlands, the Almanac finds beauty and
meaning in the footprints of mice in the snow and the rings of a felled
oak tree. It has inspired several generations of environmentalists,
scientists and artists alike, who revere and point to it as the genesis
of their work.
So instead of singing its praises with my small voice, let me instead
point you towards a specific passage, Leopold's own Forward from the
first edition, for our deliberation and discussion.
I reproduce it in its entirety here, as Leopold's prose is so tightly
packed with nuance and meaning, any abbreviation eliminates the context
and mood required for understanding. Buy

Aldo Leopold: Fierce Green Fire
Marybeth Lorbiecki
Softcover, 6x9 inches, 224 pages
R149.00
Leopold dedicated his life to answering the question: "How do we live
on the land without spoiling it?" The founder of the field of wildlife
management & starter of the national wilderness system is revealed
in this illustrated biography.
"Aldo Leopold (1886-1948) is revered among environmentalists and
naturalists for many reasons: as an officer of the U.S. Forest Service,
he was instrumental in formulating policies that helped protect
wildlands and wild animals; as an activist, he helped found the
Wilderness Society and other public-interest organizations; and as a
writer, he crafted a number of fine, philosophically charged essays and
books, including his famous memoir, A Sand County Almanac. Marybeth
Lorbiecki's overview of Leopold's life addresses each of these
contributions in turn, and it does a good job of explaining why
Leopold's influence should endure today. Of added interest are the many
photographs Lorbiecki has discovered in family and government archives,
images that help flesh out a figure who has, in ecological circles,
become something of a saint--and, as a result, a little unreal. Curt
Meine's Aldo Leopold: His Life and Work addresses Leopold's work in
greater depth, but readers seeking a sense of his many contributions,
and why they matter, will find much of value in Lorbiecki's
well-written pages." --Gregory McNamee. Buy
